Todgha Gorge in the Tinghir area of Morocco

A route-by-route guide to the High Atlas, Dades Valley, Todra Gorge and Erg Chebbi, with questions to ask before a Marrakech to Merzouga tour.

Decide how many days to allow

RANA’s Sahara Desert Dream is a three-day Marrakech to Merzouga return journey. It lists Marrakech to Dades, Dades to Merzouga and Merzouga to Marrakech as the daily stages. That is a compact circuit with significant road travel. If you prefer more time off the road, request an extra night and ask the team to show the revised overnight plan.

The ten-day Sahara and Atlas tour has a different shape: it starts in Casablanca, includes Rabat and Fes, and continues through Merzouga, Todra, Dades and Ait Ben Haddou to Marrakech. It is a useful comparison if your flights and holiday length suit a longer cross-country route.

Read the stops in order

Leaving Marrakech, a southern route crosses the High Atlas towards kasbah country and Dades. The Todra area near Tinghir brings a change in landscape before Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes. The precise order of visits depends on the agreed itinerary, daylight, road conditions and where you stay.

Ait Ben Haddou can be part of the route. UNESCO describes its ksar as an example of southern Moroccan earthen architecture. Ask whether a visit, local guide and entrance costs where applicable are included, rather than assuming every stop on a route map is a guided tour.

Check the desert night

A desert camp can differ by tent type, private bathroom, meals and how guests reach it. Ask for the proposed camp, the room or tent configuration, luggage arrangements and any activities included. If you are travelling with children or have mobility needs, explain these before the proposal is finalised.

Camel rides and other activities may depend on your booking. If you would prefer to skip an activity, ask what alternatives are possible and how that affects the price. Bring a layer for evenings and confirm seasonal conditions close to departure.

Send a precise enquiry

Tell RANA where and when you arrive, whether you will return to Marrakech, the number of travellers and the number of nights you have. Mention how you feel about long road days and what you want to prioritise: scenery, stops, a camp stay or free time.

Request a written proposal showing transport, accommodation, meals, guided visits, payment conditions and cancellation terms. That document is the right place to confirm details for your dates.
